Cocoa has a stimulating effect due to theobromine that produces an increase in the level of serotonin and dopamine. It is rich in phenolic phytochemicals, such as theaflavin, epigallocatechin gallate, resveratrol and pocianidin, which are powerful antioxidants. They have several beneficial effects for cardiovascular health, such as lowering blood pressure, improving vascular function and glucose metabolism, and helping to reduce aggregation and platelet adhesion. It also improves the bioavailability of nitric oxide.
